Braille Door Handle by Joost Grootens
Joost Grootens
Braille Door Handle, 1994
When asked to add a new element to Dudok’s city hall in Hilversum, Joost Grootens did so with an invisible design. He decided that this modern monument is so in-your-face that there is little sense in adding a new visual element as was stipulated in the brief. He made Braille inscriptions on the inside of the existing door handles so that blind people could find their way around. As part of the Droog Archives, this edition focuses on the senses and human interaction.
Recently shown at the Droog Archives exhibition, September 2 until October 27, 2024 at the Droog Gallery.
