Time is Life Carpet, 2011
In 2011, Droog collaborated with the Dutch design studio Metahaven to create the “Time is Life” carpet, a 13-meter piece that merges conceptual design with functional art. This carpet serves as a visual commentary on the commodification of time in contemporary society, transforming an everyday object into a platform for critical reflection.
The design features a complex interplay of text and graphics, incorporating phrases and motifs that challenge viewers to consider how time is valued and consumed in the modern world. By embedding these elements into the fabric of the carpet, the piece invites users to engage with its message in a tactile and intimate manner.
You begin your life in white, then evolve into simple geometry, the patterns that offer a sense of repetition and reassurance. Then you become embroiled in a Persian carpet of life experiences until finally, the white takes over again.
“Time is Life” exemplifies Droog’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of design by collaborating with thinkers like Metahaven, known for their research-driven approach to visual culture. This project not only adds aesthetic value to interior spaces but also encourages ongoing discourse about the intersection of time, value, and daily life.
