music makes change @droog

Tuesday the 12th of April – 19:30 – 21:30

US artist/singer-songwriter, Norman Vladimir, believes that “one hour can change the world”

…and that is why he, in partnership with @droog, is excited to invite you to experience his new impact platform Music Makes Change (MMC) that combines ARTIST, AWARENESS, & ACTION all in one event.

On April 12th, MMC invites the talented musician/artist Marle Thomson to perform an intimate set of music. Vladimir will then moderate a panel with Marle Thomson and local volunteer organisation, Studio Pancake, to discuss the concept of BELONGING and how it has impacted them and their respective work.

As always, the event will conclude with a mandatory sign-up by every attendee for ONE HOUR of volunteering with our featured organization, to make a powerful, local impact in our community and to round out the MMC experience.

After so much time of isolation and distance, we see now, more than ever, the importance of our human connection, to each other, and to the place we call home.

The event begins at 19:30.

Date: Tuesday the 12th of April
Time: from 19:30 – 21:30
Price: €25,-

now on show: SUBJECT TO CHANGE by SUPERFLUX

Translating future uncertainty into present day choices

Resurgent forests, multi-species banquets, solarpunk technologies: stories of hope amidst the climate crisis

Exhibition | 18 February – 10 April 2022

Download our large print guide: English version or Dutch version

Subject to Change is the first ever solo exhibition of London-based design studio Superflux. As a critically acclaimed, boundary-defying practice, Superflux confronts us with the complex and deeply interconnected nature of the challenges we face today. They invite us to remain open to a multitude of possibilities and navigate precarity with active hope. Their stories, films, objects, immersive installations and speculations craft new, optimistic, and enduring relationships with our planet, other species, technology, landscapes and each other.

Translating Future Uncertainty in Present Day Choices
Superflux’s work has been described as ‘powerful’, ‘stirring’ and ‘electrifying’. Now in its 13th year, Superflux has exhibited work at various international exhibitions, such as the 2021 Venice Architecture Biennale, National Museum of China, MoMA, V&A, La Biennale di Venezia, MAK Vienna, Vitra Design Museum, Science Gallery, KUNSTHAUS Graz and many more. Invited by Renny Ramakers, Superflux will take over Droog’s gallery with a provocative new exhibition.

The Intersection
In their most recent work the Intersection they explore the idea of active hope to navigate a murky and fragmented near future. This short film’s narrative arc revolves around four protagonists whose lives have been shaped by the dissonance of extractive technology norms, misinformation, surveillance capitalism, and context collapse. Moving away from a violent to a cooperative future, the protagonists and their communities find hope in craft, community and care.

Refuge for Resurgence
The centrepiece of the exhibition Subject to Change is Refuge for Resurgence, a multispecies dining experience with animals, birds, plants and fungi: a magnificent four-metre-long table set for 14 guests: a snake, a beaver, a raven, a wasp, a mushroom, a fox, a wolf, a wild boar, an old cow, a rat and a pigeon and three humans.

“What does it mean to give every other animal we share the planet the same love, attention, and care we give each other? To do that we invite various different species to dine together with us (humans) as equals around this table”- Jon Ardern, Superflux

Superflux expresses their desire for a more-than-human future in a recently published manifesto: a shift from fixing to caring, from planning to gardening, from systems to assemblages, from innovation to resurgence, from independence to interdependence and from extinction to precarity.

And perhaps it is this perspective that connects Superflux’s activities in the realms of culture, politics and technology with the climate crisis. By reframing humans in direct interdependence with other species, Refuge for Resurgence and Invocation For Hope challenge the long-standing histories of human exploitation and extraction. Quite simply, Superflux reworks the order of things.

The exhibition The World As We Don’t Know It has ended

January the 12th marked the last day of the exhibition The World As We Don’t Know It in the gallery space of @droog.

We thank all 20 international artists who shared their visions on the climate crisis. All of them pleaded for different relationships between humankind and the earth. Now that the exhibition has come to a close, this theme and the impact of their work will continue for many more years to come: Finding a more modest role for humans on this earth and a closer relationship between ecology and ethics.

Have you missed the exhibition, and would you still like to know more about it? Read more in this article by The Parool.

Stay tuned for next projects taking place @droog…

Join an Online Artist Talk with Embassy of the North Sea

As part of the program of the exhibition The World As We Don’t Know It, the Embassy of the North Sea and MUST cordially invite you to a participatory meeting about the Hollandse Kust West wind farm, one of the many wind farms that the Dutch government wants to build in the North Sea in the coming years. With a multidisciplinary team, the Embassy is working on radical perspectives on the underwater world in a wind farm. Their aim is to make an alternative entry for the tender ‘Windmill Park Hollandse Kust West’. The term for submitting to this tender (a project that is open to input from various parties) closes in April 2022. Your input during this participation event is highly appreciated and can still be processed!

Research team wind farm tender
The team working on the wind farm tender consists of landscape architect Ziega van de Berg, sociologist Darko Lagunas, aquatic ecologist Maarten Erich, architect Bruno Vermeersch, advisor Susan Arts, Halima Tantawy, student of International Land and Water Management and Thijs Middeldorp from the Embassy. Based on the premise that the sea and marine life are independent entities, the team investigates and listens to the diverse human and more than human interests that play a role in wind farms.

The World As We Don’t Know it @droog
This event is part of the programme of the exhibition The World as We Don’t Know It, which would have been on view until January 12, 2022 in the gallery@droog, but is now closed due to lockdown. In this exhibition, curated by Renny Ramakers, 20 international artists share their vision of the climate crisis. Landscape architect Ziega van den Berk participates on behalf of the Embassy of the North Sea with her project Doggerland, The Breeding Ground of the North Sea (2020). She proposes a design for a wind farm in which she takes existing landscape and marine life into account. From the scale of the entire Dogger landscape to that of the windmills, all design choices focus on fostering diverse and rich marine life.
