Power to the Planet!

Design Your Own Revolution

On November 11, the program Power to the Planet! by Studio Zeitgeist will start. Participants in this program jointly design a series of alternative revolutions. Each of these revolutions has a new pattern of values: what is of value is valued again. Please join. It is time for a new social order and that requires new words, sounds and actions! It’s time for revolution. It’s time  for “the world as we don’t know it!”

On Thursday evening, November 11, Studio Zeitgiest will put three revolutions in the spotlight with REVOLUTION RISING. Speakers include politician Mei Li Vos and artist Tinkebell.

On Friday 12 and Saturday 13 November, small teams in the REVOLUTION LAB will work on the words, ideas, sounds and actions of their own dreamed new order. You can sign up for a specific group with its own start time.

The alternative revolutions have a color and a thematic starting point. Its precise interpretation depends entirely on you as a revolutionary thinker and doer.

30 October: Film Screening + Artist Talk

Join us for a film screening and behind-the-scenes artist talk with Lonnie van Brummelen, Siebren de Haan and Tolin Erwin Alexander.

Date: Saturday the 30th of October
Time: from 17:00 – 19:00 hrs
Price: €5

About the Film

Stones Have Laws (Dee Sitonu a Weti) is an immersive initiation into the life of a Maroon community in the former Dutch colony of Suriname. Combining stories of African ancestral traditions and escaped slavery with enacted contemporary rituals, the film explores how the community’s powerful ties to the land have become endangered as industries threaten to devastate the region through deforestation and mining.

The project was initiated by Dutch artists Lonnie van Brummelen and Siebren de Haan, and developed in collaboration with the Surinamese theater maker Tolin Erwin Alexander, himself Okanisi Maroon. The three of them closely involved the Maroon community in the development of the film, which was made using an experimental process of collective scripting. The result is a unique cinematic form that bridges filmmaking, poetry and theatre.

After the screening, the makers will tell their story of creating the film.

This event is part of the exhibition The World As We Don’t Know It, on view in the gallery@droog. In this exhibition, 20 international artists share their vision on the climate crisis. The exhibition is on show until 12 January 2022.

What if animals, plants and other living creatures had the same rights as humans, or if rivers and mountains could sue us for the pollution we cause? What if the needs of non-human life in the North Sea were gauged before erecting windmills there? Or if we listened to children who bluntly state that eating lamb is tantamount to slaughtering a baby?

Climate crisis
In this exhibition, 20 international artists share their visions of the climate crisis. All of them plead for a different relationship between humankind and the earth, a different way of organising society. Two closely interwoven lines of thought form the leitmotif of the exhibition: a more modest role for humans on this earth and a closer relationship between ecology and ethics. ‘Let’s stop talking about a climate crisis; we should be talking about a crisis of humanity,’ says the Finnish artist Terike Haapoja.

“Let’s stop talking about the climate crisis: we need to talk about a crisis of humanity.”

24/9: Next Nature Talkshow: Biodesign

A living lamp that you need to feed, a tapestry made of animal waste streams, tableware made from algae. Welcome to the wonderful world of biodesign. This relatively new design movement uses living organisms as essential design elements. The Next Nature Talkshow: Biodesign showcases three biodesigners who are working with nature—rather than against it—to prepare us today for the world of tomorrow. The event takes place on 24 September 2021 @droog.

In the exhibition The World As We Don’t Know It – A New Bond Between Humans and Earth, 20 international artists share their visions of the climate crisis. Each artist pleads for a different relationship between humankind and earth. For the opening night, Next Nature Network has curated an evening on biodesign; this relatively new design movement uses living organisms as essential design elements. In this program, three biodesigners present their work, preparing us today for the world of tomorrow. These radical future optimists are working with nature—rather than against it—showcasing future materials that radically alter your perception of nature.

Meet the speakers:

Studio Klarenbeek & Dros is developing biopolymers based on algae and seaweed to produce objects using 3D printing, pressing into moulds and injection moulding. The designers believe that over time, this bioplastic made from algae could completely replace fossil-derived plastics, while at the same time reducing our carbon footprint. The studio established the Seaweed Circle, a local production chain starting with the cultivation of seaweed and ending with the production of biopolymers, in the province of North Holland. The methods of the Seaweed Circle can be applied anywhere that algae might be cultivated.

Teresa van Dongen is researching bacteria as a means of generating electricity for domestic use. Electric Life is one of many translations from her ongoing search for alternative and natural sources of energy and light. The light installation is completely powered by micro-organisms that have electrons as waste material. The future owner of this living light installation needs to nurture and feed the object; a splash of water and a teaspoon of vinegar a week will do. The designer believes this will lead to a closer bond between the lamp and its owner.

Shahar Livne has a fascination for materials and is not afraid to choose controversial materials to work with. ALCHIMIA is the result of a series of material experiments with animal waste streams. The result is a bio yarn that aims to find a new use for the large amount of blood, skin and fat produced by the meat industry. With this project, Livne hopes to interest other design sectors to use more sustainable and natural biomaterials, and to change the general attitude towards the use of animal materials.

The evening will be moderated by Ruben Baart, editor-in-chief at Next Nature Network.

About Outsiderwear
Outsiderwear is a project in which talented “outsider” artists collaborate with emerging or already successful fashion designers, streetwear labels and artists. An outsider artist is an artist with, for example, a mental or physical disability, a psychological vulnerability or a homeless background. Nowadays there is already more attention for outsider art, but the world of outsider art rarely comes together with the mainstream creative industry. Outsiderwear breaks this dichotomy and connects the worlds of insiders and outsiders through collaborations and various activities.
